About Winery
Sassicaia
Tuscany, Italy
Tenuta San Guido is a renowned Italian winery located in the Bolgheri DOC in the Tuscany region, famous for producing the iconic "Super Tuscan" Sassicaia. Founded by Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the winery began cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in 1948, initially for family consumption. The name Sassicaia, meaning "stony field" in Italian, refers to the rocky terrain where the vineyards are planted.
For many years, Sassicaia was the marquis' personal wine, but his son Nicolò and nephew Piero Antinori encouraged him to commercialize it. The first vintage released to the public was the 1968, revealed in 1971, and since then, Sassicaia has become one of the world's most iconic wines.
Today, Tenuta San Guido has 75 hectares of vineyards around Bolgheri, with 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, producing wines that reflect the unique elegance and character of the region. Sassicaia is widely recognized for its quality and continues to be a benchmark in the world of "Super Tuscan" wines.
