About Winery
Hospices de Civiles de Beaune
Bourgogne, France
The Hospices de Beaune is a historic charitable institution and one of the most renowned entities in Burgundy, with a tradition dating back to 1443. Over the centuries, the Hospices received vineyard donations and today manages around 60 hectares, including vineyards in some of the region’s most prestigious areas such as Clos de la Roche, Mazis-Chambertin, and Corton.
Although the Hospices de Beaune cultivates the grapes and manages the vineyards, the winemaking is carried out by the buyers who purchase the lots at the famous annual wine auction, held on the third Sunday of November since 1859. This charitable auction is one of Burgundy’s most iconic traditions, with proceeds going towards the maintenance of the hospital and the institution’s social activities.
The lot for this wine was purchased by Clarence Dillon, famous for its association with Château Haut-Brion in Bordeaux, and the winemaking was done by Maison Joseph Drouhin, one of Burgundy’s most respected wineries. This collaboration ensures that the final wine reflects the authentic character of the terroir and the elegance typical of the historic vineyards of the Hospices de Beaune.
