About Winery
Château d’Yquem
Bordeaux, France
Château d'Yquem is one of the most renowned dessert wines in the world, located in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux. It was the only wine classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the Official Classification of 1855, standing out as the most prestigious among Sauternes wines. The property, which belonged to the King of England in the Middle Ages, has a long tradition of producing late harvest wines since the late 1500s.
Its vineyard covers 103 hectares, planted with 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, which, together with botrytization (the "noble rot"), gives Yquem its complexity and sweetness that make it so special. Located on the highest hill in Sauternes, the property's terroir is essential to the wine's exceptional quality.
The Lur-Saluces family owned Yquem for more than two centuries until the estate was sold to the luxury group LVMH in 1999. Château d'Yquem remains a global benchmark for dessert wines, known for its ability to age for decades, with vintages that can last more than 100 years.
