Weingut Egon Müller Riesling Kabinett, Wiltingen, 2023

Among the most celebrated names in German wine, Egon Müller's estate in Wiltingen occupies a position of almost mythological esteem, its Scharzhofberg parcels producing Rieslings that speak in a language all their own. The 2023 growing season was defined by a dramatic contrast: a dry, hot beginning followed by an extended period of significant summer rain, before glorious September conditions rescued the harvest and imparted a vivid acidity that Müller himself describes as a fist without the velvet glove. The Kabinett captures this tension beautifully. Light-bodied, barely off-dry, and crystalline in its precision, the wine opens with lifted aromas of apricot, red gooseberry, and crushed slate, the aromatics cool-toned and refined. As it aerates, spring blossom and stone fruit deepen the bouquet, and the palate follows with wonderful elegance: focused, precise, and sustained through an extremely long finish. This is what the Scharzhofberg produces when conditions align.
