Masseto Toskana IGT, Tenuta dell' Ornellaia, 2023

The 2023 Masseto shows a brooding, richly spiced character built on a foundation of dark plum and blackcurrant, lifted by notes of clove, warm herbs and a faint floral edge. A vein of stony minerality runs beneath the fruit, echoing the vineyard's blue clay soils. On the palate it arrives supple and polished, the tannins already finely knit and the acidity bright, carrying through to cocoa, dried tobacco and a finish that seems to have no end. Critics placed it at 98 points. Still a young wine finding its final form, it rewards a little more patience, though its charms are already hard to resist.
