Description

Château Sociando-Mallet has long occupied a singular position in the Haut-Médoc. Perched on a peninsula of fine gravel above the Gironde, the estate produces wines of a density and classical conviction that have earned it a following well beyond its official Cru Bourgeois classification. The 2018 is one of the most compelling expressions this domaine has produced in recent memory. A powerful Indian summer following an abundant growing season brought each variety to a state of concentrated ripeness rarely seen, and the result in the glass is a wine of uncommon generosity. The nose opens on successive waves of dark fruit: ripe blackberry, black cherry, and a whisper of dried herbs and warm spice, the whole carried by a mintiness that speaks to the freshness preserved through the growing season. On the palate, the 2018 shows more roundness and creaminess than is usual for this address, the tannins polished and precise, the fruit dense yet finely focused. There is real depth here, with layers of dark berry, graphite, leather, and chocolate unfolding over time in the glass. The finish is long and structured, promising fine development over the next fifteen years and beyond.
